Yahrtzeit is a Yiddish word that means “anniversary,” and is used specifically to refer to the day on which a person passed away.

The Hebrew word Yizkor means “to remember” and refers to the Yizkor prayer said on behalf of family members who have passed away.  The prayer is recited during the synagogue prayer service on Yom Kippur and the holidays of Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot.

It is customary to make contributions to the synagogue or other charities for Yahrtzeit and Yizkor.
