Donation - Chametz Sale - 2021
Chametz (Leaven) Sale
In preparation for Passover we work as diligently as possible to rid our homes of all “chametz.” In the Torah (Ex. 12:19) we are instructed that, “No leaven shall be seen or found in your possession during Passover.” Some people try to eat up all of their chametz before Passover and give away or dispose of any that is left over. This is hard to do and for many it is not feasible. In addition we would certainly not dispose of all of our chametz dishes and kitchenware.
Knowing of this hardship, the Rabbis introduced a way for us not to “own” any chametz. Before Passover we “sell” the chametz to a non-Jew for the duration of Passover. After Passover, the goods all revert back into your ownership. The sale must be a proper sale in Jewish and civil law. If you want to know more about the intricacies of this please feel free to ask Rabbi Werbow for details, or click here.
Although not mandatory, many people include a contribution to Tzedakah with their sale. Contributions made with this sale will go to Rabbi Werbow's Discretionary Fund which is used to support individuals with financial needs as well as to subsidize and promote Jewish cultural, educational and religious activities.
The form below allows you to sell your chametz and make a Tzedakah contribution.
Power of Attorney for the Sale of Chametz
I, the undersigned, fully empower and authorize Rabbi Michael Werbow to act in my place and stead and, on my behalf, to sell any chametz possessed by me (knowingly or unknowingly) as of Friday, March 26, 2021 at 10:00 am, including any food in respect of which there is a doubt or possibility that it might contain chametz, and any kinds of chametz mixtures. Rabbi Werbow has my full authority to sell all chametz wherever it may be found, and to lease all places wherein said chametz may be found, by any transaction in any manner which he deems fit and proper, and for such time as he believes necessary, in accordance with the detailed terms and conditions set out in the agreed contract or sale which he will draw up. This authorization is made a part of that contract.
I also give Rabbi Werbow power and authority to appoint any proxy he deems fit in his place, with full power to sell or lease as provided herein. The above-given powers are to be exercised in conformity with Torah and Rabbinic traditions and practices.
